Correlates of Agonistic and Competitive Interactions in Pregnant Baboons
نویسنده
چکیده
Maternal condition during pregnancy is known to influence fetal viability. Recently, primatologists have suggested that certain characteristics of the fetus may influence maternal condition as well. For example, among captive pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) mothers of female infants may be a t greater risk of injury during their pregnancies than mothers of male infants. Analysis of the rates of aggression, submission, competition, and wounding among free-ranging pregnant baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in Amboseli National Park generally fail to support these findings, but several other factors such as maternal dominance rank, environmental conditions during pregnancy, maternal parity, and fetal age correlate with aggression, submission, competition, and injuries sustained by pregnant female baboons.

Social behavior and patterns of testosterone and glucocorticoid levels differ between male chacma and Guinea baboons
In multi-male, multi-female groups of mammals, males usually compete aggressively over access to females. However, species vary in the intensity of male contest competition, which has been linked to differences in testosterone and glucocorticoid profiles. Chacma (Papio ursinus) and Guinea (P. papio) baboons constitute an intriguing model to examine variation in male competition and male endocri...

The parental behaviour of male vervet monkeys, Cercopithecus aethiops, was examined to determine whether (1) females respond to the parental behaviour of males and (2) males vary the amount of parental care they provide depending upon the presence of the infant's mother. Eleven males and 11 infants from four groups were observed under dyadic conditions in which the male could or could not see t...
متن کاملAn Intergroup Encounter With Fatal Consequences in Yellow Baboons (Papio cynocephalus)
INTRODUCTION Interactions between permanent social groups of primates can range from group fusion to mutual avoidance to actual attacks on and even killing of members of one group by those of another. Competitive interactions between groups could be expected in a population in which groups use the same limited resources where their home ranges overlap. Theories of kin selection predict that suc...
متن کاملPlasmodium knowlesi H strain pregnancy malaria immune responses in olive baboons (Papio anubis)
Approximately 24 million pregnant women in Sub-Saharan Africa are at risk of suffering from pregnancy malaria complications. Mechanisms responsible for increased susceptibility to malaria in pregnant women are not fully understood. Baboons are susceptible to Plasmodium knowlesi and their reproductive physiology and host pathogen interactions are similar to those in humans, making them attractiv...
متن کاملSocial Licking in Pregnant Dairy Heifers
Housing affects social behaviors, such as competition, but little work has addressed affiliative behaviors. This study compared social licking (SL) in pregnant heifers housed indoors (in a free-stall barn) versus outdoors (on pasture), and relationships with competition, feeding and physical proximity to others. Six heifer groups were observed during two six-hour-periods in both treatments. The...
